Colorado Sen. Wayne Allard won't run for a third term, so the race is on to replace the Republican in 2008.
While there are plenty of well-known and not-so-well-known politicians lining up on both sides, the wildcard in the political playoff may be retired Denver Broncos star QB John Elway.
Elway would be an unconventional pick, but bring certain star power, celebrity and initial popularity to a race the GOP must win if it is to have any hope of regaining the Senate majority it lost in November 2006. But does he have the drive to do it?
No word yet if Elway, who has been active in GOP politics in Colorado, will run - or pass.
If Elway doesn't run - and probably even if he does - another like Republican candidate is former Rep. Scott McInnis, who represented Colorado's 3rd District for 12 years before retiring in 2003. McInnis's Senate bid recently picked up the support of another potential Republican candidate, Rep. Tom Tancredo, who represents the 6th District. Tancredo, who spent last weekend in Iowa developing a potential campaign for the White House, said McInnis is his choice for the Senate.
Other Republican names being discussed as possible Senate candidates: former Gov. Bill Owens, who just left office, and former 4th District Rep. Bob Schaffer, who lost a GOP primary race for the Senate in 2004 to brewery magnate Peter Coors.
