Former New York Mayor Rudy Guiliani has hired a big gun to help him harvest votes in Iowa.
The Des Moines Register reports that former U.S. Rep. Jim Nussle, the 2006 GOP nominee for Iowa governor, will work as Giuliani's top paid consultant in Iowa, the former mayor's exploratory committee said this morning.
The move by Giuliani is the first major step for him in Iowa, where other Republican prospects have been more active in organizing in preparation for the lead-off nominating caucuses, set for about a year from now. Nussle represented eastern Iowa in the U.S. House from 1991 until this month but lost the race for the open governorship in November.
Nussle's a big hire for Giuliani, but he's late getting started in Iowa, site of the crucial first state caucus vote.
