A poll of five southeastern states by Elon University finds that Hillary Clinton and Rudy Giuliani have the early advantage in the 2008 presidential race, the Business Journal in Greensboro, N.C., reports.
Neither the Democrat, Clinton, nor the Republican, Giuliani, drew more support in the poll among their party members than those who said it was too early to decide or they didn't know who they would vote for. The sample of 719 people in North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Georgia and Virginia included 302 self-identified Democrats and 226 self-identified Republicans.
On the GOP side, 21 percent of those polled who said they'll favor the Republicans said Giuliani was their first choice, followed by McCain at 16 percent and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney at 3 percent. But - and this is good news for Romney and the rest of the field - 56 percent said they didn't know or it was too early to tell.
The poll also asked about immigration. The results strongly suggest that a candidate with an anti-amnesty message can pick up support among that huge field of undecideds. The poll found that 63 percent "disagreed or strongly disagreed" with proposals that would allow undocumented immigrants to stay in the United States for several years if they had a job, while only 32 percent agreed or strongly agreed with such a plan.
