Nw Jersey is considering moving its presidential primary - usually held in early June - to Feb. 5 like a host of other states, but some experts say it might not boost the Garden State's influence given that former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has a commanding lead in the state.
"No doubt, the more states that hold a primary on Feb. 5 the less impact New Jersey will have on the process, simply because the bigger the pot, the more diluted the impact of any one state," said Peter Wooley, political scientist and pollster at Fairleigh Dickinson University.
Meanwhile, recent polls show the Democratic and Republican presidential primary races not competitive in New Jersey, raising the possibility candidates won't be flocking to New Jersey to woo voters, as supporters of a primary date switch have hoped.
"It may turn out that New Jersey would have been in a more powerful position having its primary toward the end and making a decisive move," said Ingrid Reed of the Eagleton Institute for Politics at Rutgers University.
A recent Quinnipiac University poll recently showed showed Giuliani leading Arizona Sen. John McCain 58-15 in New Jersey.
