"Unequivocal Mitt Romney supporter" Dean Barnett, writing at Hugh Hewitt's blog, says he wants Fred Thompson to run for president. Now, why would a strong supporter of the former Massachusetts governor's presidential ambitions want Thompson to run? I'll let Barnett explain...
He would be a wonderful candidate, and would strengthen what I think is already a pretty strong Republican field. Years where we had to choose the least lame among the competitors are still a fresh memory for me. 2008 won’t be like that. The more strong candidates we have in the field, the better for the party and, much more importantly, the better for the country. The last Republican standing should be battle tested and truly the best we have to offer.
As to whether a Thompson entry into the race would harm Romney’s chances of winning the nomination, of course it would. His entry will also make the hill steeper for McCain and Giuliani. He will be a formidable candidate; that’s a fact all the contenders will have to deal with.
Barnett says that when candidates back into the nomination because they’re the "favorite" (*cough* McCain *cough*) or because the field is weak, "you get unappealing or unqualified nominees."
He's right about that.
