Your Daily Fred roundup of Fred Thompson news and blog coverage for Monday, March 26, begins with Paul Mirengoff at the large and influential Power Line, a Mitt Romney fan who says, "right now Thompson appears more electable than Romney." Mirengoff, an attorney at the Akin, Gump law firm in D.C. and a fellow of the conservative Claremont Institute, says
Thompson looks like the perfect blend of the Allen/Frist/Romney/Gingrich and McCain/Giuliani "factions." He seems to combine the conservatism of the former cluster with at least some of the popularity and stature of the latter pairing.
And that's from a Romney supporter.
Now, on to the rest of today's Daily Fred...
...Knoxville News Sentinel columnist George Korda explains why Thompson will win if Thompson runs:
- He’s a southerner with conservative credentials in national government service
- He’s a personality in an age of personality-driven politics
- He will out-presence his opponents
Read the whole thing, as Korda recounts how Thompson's landslide victory in his 1994 Senate race didn't appear likely just three months before election day.
...Widely-read conservative blogger Bill Quick likes Tom Tancredo but will be voting for Thompson if he gets the opportunity, he says.
I cannot see Tom Tancredo ever reaching liftoff in the primaries, but from what I have learned so far, aside from Tancredo, Thompson is the only candidate on the horizon I could vote for without holding my nose. My personal nightmare would be an Obama or Clinton vs McCain race, which would force me to sit out another election. I’m going to do what I can to help assure there is at least one candidate in the contest I won’t have too many qualms about supporting.

...The American Spectator's "Prowler" blog tackles the falsehood that Thompson has not always been reliably pro-life. (Scroll down to the second item, "A Site for Sore Eyes." The "pro-choice" falsehood about Thompson is being spread by Evangelicals for Mitt, a pro-Romney website that the Spectator says is getting assistance from the Romney campaign. But the National Right to Life organization has debunked the charge.
...The Hedgehog thinks Thompson's a moderate and the buzz will fade. Hedge recycles the claim that Thompson at one point was pro-choice, but I don't agree. I live in Tennessee, and voted in the the two Senate races in which Thompson ran - and won. At no time did I ever believe Thompson was pro-choice, and it is an issue that I pay attention to.
...Writing at the American Thinker, Steven Warshawsky is skeptical about Fred.
...Will Collier's got a suggestion for Fred Thompson's campaign slogan.
