
Free Republic polled its very conservative readers and found that Fred Thompson would easily defeat Rudy Giuliani in a primary involving only those two candidates. Of course, that's not the actual GOP field. Still, Giuliani's current high poll numbers are brittle if the right conservative candidate comes along.
Is Thompson the right candidate? Conservatives think he's a soul mate, and a sort of Ronald Reagan updated for the 21st century, though not all conservatives think so. David Wiegel at Reason's "Hit and Run" blog thinks Thompson is more liberal than McCain.
I'd disagree with that characterization - though Thompson certainly isn't down the line with everything on the Right's agenda, he brings to the table none of McCain's evident hostility toward conservatives.
