Just like the singer of the old Cheap Trick song I Want You To Want Me, Colorado Congressman Tom Tancredo wants to be president - but only if you really really want him to be.
I want you to want me.
I need you to need me.
I'd love you to love me.
I'm beggin you to beg me.
That's the lead thrust of an email sent out today by Tancredo's Presidential Exploratory Committee, Team Tancredo, presented here here in its entirety as a public service - and to counter the notion that ElephantBiz.com has turned into All-Fred-Thompson-All-The-Time...
It seems Tancredo wants you to want him because he's the only candidate with the right plan to end the illegal-immigrant flood and the "comprehensive immigration reform" amnesty-lite fiasco. And he's a conservative, he stresses, he's good on all those other issues that aren't ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION but are important too, even though they aren't ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION.
I am a Reagan-style Republican. I'm pro-life, pro-second amendment, and for lower federal spending.
And did he mention he's against ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION?
Tancredo is seeking the love of conservative Republicans who haven't yet found a candidate they like in the GOP presidential wannabe field and are crying out for better choices.
Didn't I, didn't I, didn't I see you cryin?
Oh, didn't I, didn't I, didn't I see you cryin?
Feelin all alone without a friend, you know you feel like dyin.I want you to want me.
I need you to need me.
I'd love you to love me.
I'm beggin you to beg me.
I want you to want me.
I want you to want me.
I want you to want me.
I want you to want me...
Okay, here's Tancredo's email. Just click the "continue reading" link.
Dear Friend of American Security,
I am Congressman Tom Tancredo. I'm going to run for the Republican nomination for President - if I can gain your support. Read this short message, and you will understand why I'm running and why I must have your support..
You've probably seen me on FoxNews or other TV in the past few weeks, since I formed my Presidential Exploratory Committee.
Speaking out for SECURE BORDERS and IMMIGRATION SANITY has been my passion since I was first elected to Congress eight years ago. In fact, I've often been described as America's foremost champion for Secure Borders.
When I entered Congress, I was surprised that there was no organized effort to fight the Open Borders crowd who ran Capitol Hill.
So I formed the House Immigration Reform Caucus, which now boasts over 100 members. Since I formed the caucus, not a single Illegal Alien Amnesty bill has passed in Congress!
But the other side has recently been encouraged by the election of the new Democratic majority. Pelosi and Kennedy, and their ally enthusiastic ally John McCain are planning to push through illegal alien amnesties and sharply higher immigration.
Unfortunately, the White House working behind the scenes to encourage and even coordinate its own amnesty bill. This is a tragedy for our country's future.
America's next President must make Border Security and Immigration Sanity one of his very highest priorities!
And here's the thing that really makes me angry. The Republican Party's drifting the wrong way, away from Border Security, away from conservative principles.
Most Republican Candidates for President actually agree with Pelosi and Kennedy, working for millions more immigrants, for amnesty after amnesty.
If I don't run, the Frightening Possibility is that BOTH the Democratic and the Republican nominees for President in 2008 may advocate a virtual abandonment of Border Security.
Don't believe it? Think about a President John McCain. He co-sponsored a bill last year to DOUBLE legal immigration. McCain scorns the defenders of America's borders. He hates the border fence.
How about a President Sam Brownback? A good man, we all agree. But Brownback never met an amnesty he didn't like! He wants all illegal aliens to be made citizens.
So maybe you think Mitt Romney is better? Romney REFUSED to support Ramos and Compean, those persecuted Border Patrol agents who were recently sent to prison for wounding an illegal alien drug dealer.
Do you want someone fighting in the Republican primaries who holds your views on the issues that matter most?
I'm sure you don't want amnesty supporters Rudy Giuliani or Chuck Hagel getting the nomination! These men are hardly conservatives! My friends, I've just about gone through the entire list of Republican candidates! Will the banner of immigration reform be waved? Will we have a truly conservative nominee? That depends on me getting your support.
Alarmed at the Republican Party's steady drift to the LEFT? So am I! Let's stop it!
My convictions don't change with the weather. I believe in strong borders, iron-clad national security, and an end to immigration abuses.
I am a Reagan-style Republican. I'm pro-life, pro-second amendment, and for lower federal spending.
Yes, I'm running for President, if you want me to. But I simply cannot run without financial resources. Yes, campaigns require money! I must raise that money to represent you in national media and to voters across the country.
Sincerely,
Tom Tancredo
You can tell Tancredo you want him by contributing here.
Did we mention he's against illegal immigration?
P.S. To be fair to Tancredo, here are links to the YouTube videos of his speech at the recent CPAC conference. It's a three-parter: Part one. Part two. Part three.
