What If The Right Said Fred?

The speculation about former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson running for president that was mentioned in the original post at this link has been superceded by actual events, reported and commented on in many subsequent blog posts. I'm posting a list of links to those posts, and urging readers to subscribe to the ElephantBiz.com RSS feed for future updates on Thompson's possible presidential candidacy, the Republican presidential campaign and related political news news.

Those rumors about Fred Thompson running for president just won't go away. Paul Bedard mentions it in the latest U.S. News:

We hear that his buddies are strongly urging him to jump into the already packed GOP race. "The draft-Fred movement grows," says one ally, citing several blogs pushing Thompson, who has been feeding his fans with occasional commentary-laced fill-in work for radio's Paul Harvey.

Senator_Fred_Thompson.jpgThe American Spectator picks it up on "The Prowler," reporting:

According to sources familiar with Thompson's thinking, he is not at this moment looking to enter the race. And while there is talk in the media of a "Draft Fred" movement afoot, Thompson seems to be focused on a bigger picture right now.

"Sure, he's hearing the talk about unhappiness with the current field of candidates," says a Thompson supporter, "but he's just as concerned about how the Republican Party got to this point, and where conservatives can take the party moving forward. He sees a dearth of up and comers out in the statehouses, and he sees a dearth of ideas. If nothing else, I think he wants to get conservatives and the GOP back on track."

It isn't just politicals who are talking up Thompson. According to RNC fundraisers we've spoken with over the past couple of months, Thompson is someone mentioned as a prospective candidate by some West Coast and Southern party money men who would like to see him enter the race.

"He's a bankable name on a couple of different levels. Donors love to have him at fundraisers," says one Chicago-based RNC donor.

See also the Prowler's selection of reader comments on the idea of Fred Thompson running for president.

There's also speculation that Thompson would make a great VP choice for Rudy Giuliani if the former New York mayor is the nominee.

Meanwhile, the National Journal said a week ago that Thompson won't run, period. They cited his friendship with Sen. John McCain, who is running. But McCain's not doing very well in the polls - if his candidacy looks doomed, might Thompson step in?

He really does seem like he'd be a natural addition to make Giuliani more palatable to folks. I just hope we choose a palatable win over a principled loss this time around.

If he's such close friends with McCain, we don't need him.

It really doesn't matter who Republicans choose as their
candidate in 2008. God himself could levitatingly
descend from the heavens to the steps of the Lincoln
Memorial as a presidential candidate, with bright light
glowing from his body. Jesus could materialize from
thin air over the Reflecting Pool, and walk on the
water to join God at the Lincoln Memorial as his running
mate, and they still would lose the 2008 election if
they ran as Republicans. The majority of the American
voters are still pissed about Iraq... about Katrina...
about high energy costs... about the Rich White Men of
the Republican Party who seem to be uninterested in the
pain that the mismanagement of any of these things have
caused to the typical not-rich American.

Voters got to vent their frustration and displeasure in
the 2006 election, but they are not finished cleaning
house yet. However, you can bank on the fact that they
will finish the job in 2008.

Conservative types better hope that the campaigns of the
top Democrat candidates somehow self-implode, or else we
will be saying either "President Hillary" or "President
Obama."

If you liked trying to explain to your children about
what oral sex is, and how it is related to the President
of the United States, just wait until "First Gentleman"
Bill Clinton returns to the White House with no offical
duties or responsibilities. Forget interns... not even
female cabinet members, female members of Congress, or
even female heads of state will be safe with Bill once
again roaming the halls of the White House with zero
accountability to anyone but a wife with the power to
pardon him of any misconduct. Won't it be just a hoot
explaining to your children what it means to create a
hostile work environment?

... and all of this because the current administration
refused to pour additional resources on a continual
basis into Afghanistan and Iraq and New Orleans to
finish the jobs as soon as humanly possible?

The moral of the story is that when you opt to fight a
war... against terrorists... against hurricanes...
against dictators... against insurgents... against
anyone... you fight the war by presenting continually
overwhelming forces to your opponent, and you continue
to expend any cost to steadily increase the pressure
against that opponent until the opponent is forced to
capitulation. War is such an unmoral, bloody, horrific
thing that to do any least is equally unmoral and
horrific.

Six years into the war in Afghanistan and four years
into the war in Iraq, and we still have not seemed to
learn. A year and a half after Katrina and half of the
population of New Orleans is still missing for lack of
action.

Maybe after four years of reflection with a Democrat in
the White House, at least one Republican presidential
candidate in 2012 will have figured it out. It was
already too late for the Republican candidates of 2008
over two years ago...

Please Fred come and save us for the idoits of this world! Zell Miller would be a great VP for you! WHAT A DREAM TICKET! FRED & ZELL

check out his record on immigration, this needs to be considered by all conservatives

How dare you post your comments utilizing imagery that you yourself obviously don't believe in. You selfishly paint a bleak picture in an effort to draw the ire of we Conservatives. The Honorable Fred Thompson is the perfect choice along with Representative Duncan Hunter to lead a movement in this country to propel us into greater economic stability and to keep our citizens safe.

The fact that Fred Thompson is even considering a bid for the '08 Presidential race gives me hope. No Conservative in their right mind goes into politics thinking that there is money to be made. Conservatives are drawn to politics much like some of us were drawn to military service. We served to say they we made a difference. It shouldn't be about the money – that's what liberal democrat's do. The end-all be-all career for a liberal is a job that they can almost never be fired from – a government job.

Fred Thompson doesn't need the spotlight or the money. His calling is obviously to serve his country. His is a selfless devotion to his core principles, and is welcomed by many who currently see leadership in the Conservative movement.

You want to talk about God and Jesus? Fred lives it. Would you like to see a man stand up for what he believes in? Fred will. In the past I have watched Fred on the Senate floor, I've seen him interviewed on the MSM cable networks, and best of all, I've seen him act in movies.

I support President Bush. He is best when he is not on script. He shoots from the hip better than he does from a teleprompter. The teleprompter is not his strong point. That's because he is a genuine person. Personally, I believe his folly began with the policy of the “new-tone”. He should have cleaned house and set his own people within the White House. With all of the “entitlement syndrome” Clinton holdover's that still infect this Administration, it's no wonder Scooter Libby was convicted. This administration chooses not to exert itself. I suspect it was the narrow margin of victory, combined with the fact that the President is only Conservative on certain issues, however that is only my opinion.

Fred Thompson will convey the strength and power that Conservatives hunger for. Fred Thompson will LEAD the Conservative movement. Not because he is an actor as Ronald Reagan was before him. He will energize the base, and he will convert the moderates. He has great recognition like Giuliani. I would expect such arrogance from a liberal to spout such ignorance as, “It was already too late for the Republican candidates of 2008 over two years ago...”.

Power is not a birthright. You probably see the White House Inauguration for Hillary as a “Coronation”. She will assume the title of Maximus Testicularus LockBoxus I (the first). Why have the election at all? It's a waste of time as far you liberals are concerned, right? Hillary, Obama, Biden? None of these are palatable. They will drive this country into socialism that will take one hundred years to recover from just as we are beginning to attempt recovery from the horrors of the Roosevelt Administration that gave us social security and welfare.

Worried about Fred's position on immigration? Which is worse – Hillary or Obama in the White House, or Fred's record on immigration according to some website. Conservatives – decide for yourselves. For me the choice is easy.

Fred Thompson will lead the movement because he lives as a Conservative, and people will follow because they will be inspired.

We want Fred Thompson for President

Run for Prez in '08 and get many votes including mine!!

RUN FRED RUN! MY CHECKBOOK IS AT YOUR DISPOSAL.

The Republican Party is looking for another Reagan and can't find one within it's ranks but that is because they are overlooking Fred Thompson. He is what this country needs right now.
Some good honset country leadership may just get us through the next 8 years. He is the only person I would be excited to see run and I would vote for him no matter who he's up against. I suspect they are many many people who feel the same way.

I have one thing to say to my fellow Republicans.

PLEASE IF THE PARTY CAN DO ANYTHING PUT FRED THOMPSON IN THE WHITE HOUSE HE IS BY FAR THE STRONGEST FIGURE THIS PARTY HAS HAD SINCE LINCOLN. AND IS THE BEST SOLUTION THIS COUNTRY CAN HAVE IN TERMS OF PUTTING A LOGICAL MIND IN OFFICE. GO FRED I CANT WAIT TO VOTE FOR YA BUDDY.

I notice that Sen.Fred managed to avoid the draft in 1967 which was NO mean feat back then since they were even taking admitted gays. If even Al Gore could not avoid being drafted, how did Fred do it? Rudy also managed to do the same despite being elegible in 1968 onwards.
I am astounded that so few Republican candidates for President ever served in the active duty military during Vietnam. Yet they all pose as big patriots, but they RAN from such service.

Fred is the only possible candidate that has the guts to say what needs to be said without all the useless flowery addendum. Go for it Fred - here's one AZ vote.

Run Fred !!!

Where do I send my check !!!

I would support him 100%

I can't think of a better person to run on the Republican ticket than Mr. Thompson. Looking forward to working for his campaign.

Go Fred, Go! The other Bozo's wouldn't have a chance! I can't believe NO ONE has listened to the American people. Still the bickering in Washington! We didn't ask for Pelosi and her "agenda."

These politicians just don't get it! Any of the current so-called, "candidates" get in and I think we'll be in need of a good ole revolution!

I wouldn't vote for a stinkin' single one of these politicians that have thrown their hat in. Hillary is a lying, good for nothin', scandelous blow-hard, Hussein has no business trying to be pres. of the U.S., McCain and Rudy are liberals posing as Republicans, definitely NOT conservatives! Mitt??? Well......and 'ol Edwards, I think Coulter summed that up just fine.

I think Thompson would put us back in the days of Reagan. Seems to be an honest, tough, stand up guy that could possibly get the politics out of politician.

I would fully support a run from Fred!

Do we need yet another Dick Breath for a candidate?

Another Dick Cheney...Vietnam No Show (other priorities, like booz, schmooz, and politics).

Fred Thompson is exactly what this country needs. The Republican Party has been dominated by the loudness of the Christian Right for too long and we are in desperate need for a good ol' fashioned Goldwater Conservative to come back in our midst. Though Thompson is a strong Christian, he doesn't wear it on his sleeve. His direction in policy leads him to what makes more economic sense than something else. As an upcoming generation Republican I would like to see more policy made from the Reagan style of Conservatism rather than the Bush style.

If Fred will run, he'll have no trouble getting the votes! My extended family is in the hundreds and they will all vote FRED.
We could sure use some common sense candidate who knows what America is all about. We want a true American to lead us into the next election. The candidates now are more interested in a government job and not what is the right thing to do. How about Zell Miller as a running mate?

If Fred runs, the Democrats won't have a chance at the oval office. We will be a proud country once again. I'll have my $$$$ ready to support this great man.

If ever there was a take, it is no. Let's get started of it.

Fred, consider strongly that the Republican party needs a strong communicator, which you are! Run, run, run!

Fred: You got more common sense than anybody else running. Get out ‘there’ and start talking so people can hear your view points ... and you will win the votes. Remember you well from the hearings. You pushed issues nobody else woulld. Wish you well, and you will make a good president. Start now ...!! Get going !!

Let's face it, Ron Paul is the only true conservative left in America. He’s the only one that got a 100% rating from the conservative index. Ron Paul always knew that Sadam posed no threat to America, unlike Thompson. Ron is the conservative that Ronald Reagan always wanted to be, but never was. Most Republicans don’t realize that government expanded greatly under Reagan, while the economy tumbled because of unnecessary government regulation. Thompson is all hype but very little substance just like our current president. Just remember Bush was supposed to be a tough no-nonsense Texan but turned into an international socialist. I hope the Republican party doesn’t fall for the same scam with Thompson. Both the Democrats and Republicans both hate Ron Paul, but if both parties hate him he must be doing something right. Ron Paul is blessing from God, whether America chooses to take that blessing is up to the people.

"Sadam posed no threat to America"

Sorry Ryan, but the pilots who got shot at regularly while enforcing the treaty no-fly zone would differ with you abotu that.

So would those who were working for Saddam to train terrorists in Salman Pak, and other bases.

Ron Paul is not a conservative, he is a LIBERTARIAN. Lifetime member if I remember my work for him in 1988 as a presidential candidate for the LP.

What are Ron Pauls stands on Abortion?
Gay Marriage?
Prostitution and Drugs?

Still spouting the ol LP lines? Or has he flipflopped to pander like Romney?

Ryan, nice try at disinformation. Shame you have to use fallacies to defend your candidate. Got any more moronic statements?

Go Fred Go! Thompson for President in 2008!

Jim Gilmore for Vice-President!

we want to vote for FRED THOMPSON!

Please don't hold back Fred.. We NEED you!

Two votes for Fred in this house and Im talking Fred to everybody I see. Please run Fred.

Join forces with over 6,200 grassroots voters and encourage Fred Thompson to go for it.

www.grassrootsvoter.com

There is only one thing to say = RUN, FRED, RUN!!!!!!

PLEASE get in the race Mr. Thompson! America is looking for a hero, and I believe that you are that hero...this is your destiny!

GO FRED!!!!Law & Order. I'll gladly vote for you. We'll gladly support FRED

Fred, will you enforce the laws? What American needs now more than anything is a President who will reclaim America for Americans.

What that will entail would be to take America back to its roots and to re-establish the Constitution as it was set forth all those years ago by our very wise founders of this country. Remember the one that we all learned about in Grade School but that has somehow been lost in this "politically correct" society today?

We want and need a President who will stand up for America and Americans and that will mean he will need to ETL. Enforce the Laws especially in regard to immigration. This great country was not built or intended to be a get-a-way for anyone, but was intended to be a land of opportunity.

We are not trying to be selfish about the opportunities that are available here, but we do want everyone to earn that opportunity through the equal and proper lawful channels equally.

Will you do this? If you will do this, you would be voted President of the United States hands down, because this is what the majority of Americans want for this great country.

We want America back for Americans.

Will you do this?

I really like Fred Thompson alot, but think he NEEDS to STEP it up quite a bit. He can win this thing, but he is going to have to spend more time in Iowa and NW Iowa. We are an important State and I believe he needs to hit it harder here. i know you can be a passionate peron, now is the time to show America that. Step up the appearances and the time with normal people like farmers and Ma and Pa store owners. You can do this, so step it up and be the man I know you can be!
