CBN News Washington correspondent David Brody reports that former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, now running for the Republican presidential nomination, would do the Don Imus show again if invited, despite Imus' recent rather rude remarks regarding the Rutgers University women's basketball team. Huckabee sent Brody the following statement:
“Yes I'd go on the show again. Imus said something really insensitive, he admitted it and apologized. He's continued to have me on his show when I said stupid things. I consider him a friend and don't abandon my friends even when they do something wrong. What Imus said was wrong, but he seems genuinely sorry. He's certainly not the first to put his foot in his mouth - and he won't be the last."
Imus' remark was insensitive, boorish and tinged with race. But he has a huge audience. I wouldn't urge any presidential candidate to go on Imus' show in the next few weeks after he returns from his two-week suspension, but as the campaign rolls on, I would. Imus, unlike many radio talk hosts, listens to guests and lets them talk. Going on his show doesn't mean a guest endorses everything Imus has ever said, any more than talking to a writer from the New York Times or National Review means a candidate agrees with every word that writer ever wrote.
Tolerance of other people's human failures is not a bad quality for a presidential candidate.
