The Draft Fred Thompson 2008 Committee says the latest USA Today/Gallup poll shows former Sen. Fred Thompson’s "strength and appeal among Republican voters continuing to rise."
This poll coincides with the announcement that the Draft Fred Thompson 2008 Committee has received over 28,000 signatures on its online petition asking Senator Thompson to enter the race. Although not a declared candidate, Gallup shows him is a solid third place with 13 percent of the vote behind former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Senator John McCain. Thompson’s numbers have risen three points since the poll was conducted in early April.
The Draft Committee’s online petition, available at www.fred08.com, has received more than 28,000 signatures from residents of all 50 states in the past four weeks. More than 17,000 voters have sent personal text comments to the Committee expressing their support and a growing number are submitting personal video clips expressing support through the Committee’s recently announced YourTube4Fred online project.
"We’ve said it before, but these poll numbers along with the remarkable enthusiasm the Draft Committee is seeing are clear signs that voters are ready for a Thompson announcement," said Congressman John J. Duncan, Jr., Co-Chair of the Draft Committee.
Duncan added, "Voters are attracted to Thompson for a very simple reason: he communicates a solid vision for America that we can all share. I have no doubt that if and when he joins this race, voters will see what we already know - Fred Thompson is a true American statesman and would be an outstanding President."
Thompson also is in third place in the latest CNN/Opinion Research poll, also with 13 percent. A closer look at that poll shows that Thompson is well-positioned to move up as soon as he announces his candidacy, given the widespread dissatisfaction among Republican voters with front-runners Rudy Giuliani and John McCain, and the inability, so far, of Mitt Romney to convince many voters that he's the strongest conservative alternative.
...In other Fred Thompson news today, The Tennessean has published the third part of its three-part series on Thompson. Today's installment looks at Thompson's movie and television career.

Fred Thompson did himself no favors today or last night with his mean spirited though somewhat humorous promo on taking a few punches at Michael, a freelance political hack. By giving voice to Michael's criticism, Fred showed his lack of political savvy and a meanspiritedness that is certainly typical of quite a few Republican Politicians.
That is one reason I am not a Republican, nor am I a Democrat, but certainly give my preference to Democrats over any Republican running. The Republican Debate was shown on FOX News, another mistake maybe. How many undecided or Democratic voters watch that source do you think? Of course it is the primary and it is the Republican base to which they put on their show for now. Good luck if you guys think you can overcome the Bush bebacle. God help us if you do!
