The Tennessean profiles an East Tennessee Chevy dealer who, it says, "fueled [the] early draft-Fred drive" that has former U.S. Sen. Fred Thompson on the verge of running for president. Not to claim that I did anything to prompt Thompson to run, but I did sense that he might be thinking about it back in mid-January when I wrote this and this.
For a guy who says he's not running for political office, former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson sure is raising his public political profile lately.
The Tennessean story describes Chevy dealer Steve West's efforts to gin up a draft-Fred movement, and says West's story "says a lot about how the Internet era is changing politics." That left me expecting a part of the story would focus on some innovative way West secretly used the Internet to build momentum for a Thompson candidacy, but all he did was use email. And the story doesn't make clear if West is or is not connected to the official unofficial Draft Fred orgranization. Still, an interesting tale.
