Oxford Analytica says Fred Thompson can't win the Republican nomination:
The talk surrounding a Thompson candidacy is more a sign of Republican discontent with the current slate of candidates than genuine enthusiasm for what he could bring to the race. While he may shortly jump in the ring, he is unlikely to trouble the leading contenders.
Oxford Analytica is an independent strategic-consulting firm drawing on a network of more than 1,000 scholar experts at Oxford and other leading universities and research institutions around the world. So, what do they really know about Fred Thompson and the Republican electorate?
Without campaign Thompson is already solidly among the top three candidates, and if he enters the race the rationale for most of the also-rans in the field evaporates. When it does, their support - only 1 or 2 percentage points apiece for the likes of Sam Brownback, Mike Huckabee, Jim Gilmore, Duncan Hunter and Tommy "The Other" Thompson - has one natural home in a field that would then include Rudy Giuliani, John McCain, Mitt Romney and Fred Thompson.
Fred Thompson.
