Former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson is trying to make "his" plan for fixing Iraq a centerpiece of his campaign, but this week he issued what I consider to be irresponsible statement on the war.
Thompson said the war in Iraq "may be won or lost this week" depending on whether the Iraqi parliament passes an oil revenue sharing law by today that provides for direct payments to the Iraqi people from the country's oil profits.
It is flat irresponsible to define an ongoing war as "won" or "lost" based on an artificial timetable. If the Iraqi parliament needs a little more time to pass the oil revenue sharing law, it should take it. That's part of being a functioning democracy - taking the time to work out the political compromises and get the deal done right.
