The Wichita Eagle likes the new compromise immigration reform proposal rattling around in Washington D.C., but wonders when Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback will take a position on it:
Just when it looked as if comprehensive immigration reform had no chance for another year, a bipartisan compromise plan emerged in the Senate last week. It's imperfect, drawing plenty of kicks from left and right while mostly kicking the can down the road. ... Which brings us to the issue of whether Kansas' leading lawmaker on this issue, Sen. Sam Brownback, will support it. Where he was a negotiator of last year's proposed comprehensive reform, he has been unclear where he stands so far, though he gave a floor speech last week decrying amnesty and calling "first and foremost" for a secure border.
The immigration reform bill is not much different than the plan Brownback helped negotiate last year. But last year Brownback wasn't running for president.
