Karl Kurtz at the National Conference of State Legislatures' blog The Thicket has a post on the Top 10 Reasons for Elected Officials to Blog, which links to a number of different articles and blog posts giving such advice. Kurtz writes...
I reviewed a fairly large sample of the legislators' blogs listed in the right column of this page. ... Many of the legislators' blogs are well-written and interesting, but they could take greater advantage of the blogging medium by following the suggestions in my article to: post regularly, find a consistent voice (know why you are blogging) and market your blog.
While Kurtz's post - and the posts he links to - focus on blogging as a tool for state legislators, his advice is good for elected officials at all levels of government, and for candidates too. The public likes to be able to interact with its elected officials and legislators, and to dialog with them on important issues. And on not-so-important policy issues - for every issue is important to someone, even if they are the only one.
Blogs are simple, low-cost tools for enabling that conversation between lawmakers and the citizenry, one Republican state legislators across the country would be well advised to take full advantage of.

Fred Thompson isn;t doing too bad a job with his blog and podcasts at ABC News.
I wonder if he can establish that as a communications channel assuming he gets elected?
Go read his stuff, and listen to him. then think about how effective that woudl be - a blogging president, who knows how to used podcasts, YouTube, etc.
