Rod Dreher, writing at BeliefNet, says he's really starting to "dig" Mike Huckabee among the crowded field of Republican presidential candidates. Dreher writes, "Read this lengthy transcript of a session GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee had at the Pew Forum in Washington. I'm really starting to dig this guy."
The comments are interesting, too.
Dreher's an interesting guy. An assistant editorial page editor and occasional columnist for The Dallas Morning News, he also is a contributor to National Review, in addition to writing the "Crunchy Con" blog for Beliefnet.com.
Five years ago he wrote an essay in National Review that explored a niche within American conservatism that Dreher defined as granola conservatism. He called granola conservatives "crunchy cons" and defined them as traditional conservatives who believed in environmental conservation, frugal living and preserving traditional family values. Dreher wrote that crunchy cons also are skeptical of the excesses of capitalism, and tend to be religious.
Last year, Dreher published a book about crunchy cons titled Crunchy Cons: How Birkenstocked Burkeans, Gun-Loving Organic Gardeners, Evangelical Free-Range Farmers, Hip Homeschooling Mamas, Right-Wing Nature Lovers, and Their Diverse Tribe of Countercultural Conservatives Plan to Save America (or At Least the Republican Party).
I could see crunchy cons gravitating to Huckabee.
