Still, the actor enters the race trailing the top three Democratic candidates by 3 to 10 points. Against New York Senator Hillary Clinton, Thompson attracts 44% of the vote. That’s three less than Clinton’s 47% total. Illinois Senator Barack Obama leads Thompson by seven points, 49% to 42%. Former North Carolina Senator John Edwards has the biggest edge over Thompson, 47% to 37%.
Among Republicans seeking the White House, Thompson is currently in fourth place behind Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney, and John McCain.
I'd be interested to see which of the four GOP leaders does best against each of the three Democratic leaders.
The point that's gotta give Democrats heartburn is that their front-runner, Hillary Clinton, doesn't do very well in head-to-head matchups with a variety of Republicans. A mid-May Rasmussen survey found her leading both Thompson and Romney by just 3 points, while a more recent survey finds Hillary, with all her name recognition and money, leading former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee by just five points and Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback by just 7 points. Huckabee is in the single digits in most polls of GOP voters, and Brownback barely registers in the polls at all.
