Country singer Sammy Kershaw is running for Lt. Governor of Louisiana as a Republican, challenging incumbent Lt. Gov. Mitch Landrieu. This is not a stunt - it's a serious campaign. From his website:
I’m personally motivated to do more than just talk about what we should have in this state, and am prepared to shift my energies and work for a change. I’m not a career politician. I am a citizen of this state, who knows we need leadership more than ever. I will be the honest leader Louisiana needs.
Kershaw announced his candidacy today on the steps of the Vermilion Parish courthouse.
Kershaw, 49, is longtime Republican. He performed at campaign events for President Bush in 2004 and at Bush's inaugural festivities in 2001. This also isn't his first foray into public service. Kershaw established the Sammy Kershaw Foundation in his hometown of Kaplan, Louisiana, donating millions of dollars for the betterment of poverty-stricken children.
Kershaw's country hits include "She Don't Know She's Beautiful," "Third Rate Romance" and "Queen of My Double Wide Trailer."
Interesting trivia: Kershaw is married to country singer Lorrie Morgan, who in the 1990s dated then-Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee for a couple of years.
Of Thompson, Morgan once said:
"For a while, I enjoyed my first exposure to politics. It was interesting to hear about political conversations, and people even began talking about Fred as a potential president.... I put myself to the task of being a great companion to a stimulating and important man, and as a result I become boring.... I had to stop and think about the political implications of everything before I uttered a word in public.... For a while, I wanted to marry Fred, but I knew he could not accept me as I am."
Apparently her reticence to play role of political spouse has receded.
