Rudy Giuliani, John McCain and probably Fred Thompson are skipping the August 11 Ames Straw Poll in Iowa, but second-tier GOP candidate Tom Tancredo has been spending a lot of time in Iowa and is even offering to provide his Iowa supporters free tickets to the Ames Straw Poll
Tancredo hasn't issued a press release regarding Ames, but the home page of Tancredo's campaign website says, "Do you have friends or family in Iowa? Contact the Iowa offices for information on the August 11 straw poll in Ames. We'll buy your ticket and give you the latest details." And Tancredo is spending a lot of time in Iowa.
The ongoing media spotlight on the immigration issue benefits Tancredo and as that spotlight may continue for awhile, it makes sense for Tancredo, even with his limited resources, to put some effort and money into doing well in the Ames straw poll. As long as immigration is a hot issue, Tancredo benefits from a higher level of passion amongst his supporters - passion that may boost pro-Tancredo turnout at Ames.
