The US government now has greater authority to eavesdrop on terrorist suspects without warrants on American citizens' telephone calls and e-mails after President Bush signed new surveillance legislation into law on Sunday that will allow the administration to do what it believed it already had the authority to do: tap phone calls and intercept emails between people in the United States and foreigners who are believed to have a connection to al Qaeda.
The legislation passed by the Democratic-led Congress - the same Democrats who railed against warrantless eavestropping on foreign suspected terrorists back when they thought it would help them win elections - actuall expands the surveillance options.
Why did Democrats vote for a program that they criticized? Surely you know the answer to that. The criticism was meant to rally their base and make President Bush look bad, but when it comes down to it they know that the American people actually support the tapping of phone calls of suspected terrorists and don't like political parties that don't make a priority of American security.
