Surge Success Splitting the Democrats

Growing signs that the "surge" is succeeding is splitting the Democrats in Congress, with some backing away from the party leadership's push to set a date for withdrawal, while others are doubling down on their efforts to surrender the pursuit of victory. Don Surber's got the numbers and commentary:

The Surge is working. The initial success on the field by the American army is splitting the Democratic caucus in the House between those who want to Lose At Any Cost and the Weathervanes Who Follow The Polls.

Those polls are bad. Only 3% of Americans approve of the Democratic Congress’s handling of the war. Bush is at 24% in this category. Overall, Bush has better poll numbers than the Democratic Congress.

Rank-and-file Democrats already are worrying about the fate of all incumbents in 2008. They see the shift in public support. 42% now think the war was a good idea, up from 35% in May. These Democrats are tacking back.

The Rabid Dog Democrats see it too, and are upping the ante to out now. They must strike while the iron is tepid. If they wait till September, their surrender will be surrendered.

Democratic Sen. Carl Levin of Michigan said as much to the Detroit Free Press...

Fewer people support Congress on the war than support President Bush on the war. Support for the war is rising - up 7 points since May, as news continues to filter out of Iraq that the surge is working. Even major-media outlets are doing stories now about signs of surge success.

And yet, Sen. Levin and other defeat-at-all-costs Democrats are more intent than ever on snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. If the poll numbers continue to rise on the surge and on President Bush's handling of the war - and they will rise as the surge strategy continues to show progres - the Surrendercrats may just find their continued insistence on legislating American defeat will result only in their own defeat, at the polls.

The anti-war Left's high water mark was the 2006 Democratic primary win of Ned Lamont in the U.S. Senate race in Connecticut, but even then the hysterical doom-and-gloom Left didn't have the majority necessary to put Lamont in the Senate. Democrats may outnumber Republicans in Connecticut, but the pro-victory voters outnumbered the pro-surrender voters.

It's true that Americans these days don't like long, inconclusive wars, and they don't like it when America isn't on the trail of victory. But they like politicans committed to America's defeat even less - and when the American military, an institution trusted by huge majorities of the American people, is seen as having success on the battlefield, support for the war naturally rises.

The Democratic Party in recent months increasingly linked itself to the hysterical DailyKos/MoveOn.org surrender-at-any-cost Left, and its presidential candidates compete to see who can be the most anti-war - but now the worm is turning. Witness Barack Obama, who has for months megaphoned his anti-war stance, suddenly pounding his chest and promising to invade Pakistan if he's elected President.

They know. They know the "surge" is working.

Yes, Democrats know the surge is working. The question is; how can they sabotage it before next year’s elections? They need Iraq to continue to be perceived as a failure and/or a weak economy. Call me a cynic but, in today’s political climate I view the Dems as more interested in power than the wellbeing of the nation.
