
At the Club for Growth's Fall Economic Policy Conference today, the Republican frontrunners were on hand to address the attendees and they all used the opportunity to take some shots at one another. Per Jonathan Martin, Fred Thompson took aim at both Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney, and John McCain in one fell swoop:
While I was fighting for tax cuts in Congress, others were opposing tax cuts in New York state. Others were claiming not to be raising taxes but were instead raising every state-mandated fee and imposing 'hidden taxes' on unsuspecting taxpayers. While others were repudiating Reagan-Bush tax policies, I was fighting for them.
The first statement is clearly aimed at Giuliani, while the fees remark is aimed at Romney's record as Governor, and the tax cuts remark at McCain.
Club for Growth is an all important interest group because they have shown in the past that they will get involved in primaries and that they aren't afraid to use sharp rhetoric and go negative. While it's unlikely that they will endorse in this primary, they can't well be ignored.
