Per First Read, John Edwards unvieled a speech entitled "Renewing the Social Contract". Putting aside that that's the wrong use of the term social contract, what he had to say is even more brilliant:
Over the course of our history, every generation of Americans has helped to expand the reach of that compact, moving us ever closer to the America of our ideals, where opportunity is truly shared by all. But now, instead of expanding further, our social compact is falling apart.
Great rhetoric, the problem is that opportunity in this country opportunity is shared by all. There is a reason illegal immigration is out of control and people from all over the world want to come here. And John Edwards, the son of a textile worker who rose up to become a multi millionaire and run for preisdent, should know that the best.
It's one thing to appeal to "hope" and "change" without any details to back it up like Barack Obama does. It's something else to just throw out broad controversial statements that put down everything American stands for.
