It seems Fred Thompson is out with his first ad (not counting the announcement ad) and it is, interestingly, a web ad. It is rare to see a major campaign invest in web advertising. This is a for a couple reasons.
Political advertising is about penetration. The more ads you run, the more your targeted audience (voters) sees and hears them, and the more your message/image is reinforced.
It is also about knowing your audience and targeting them directly. This is why candidates will tailor their ads to New Hampshire, Iowa, and South Carolina who have different electorates.
On the Internet, your audience is broader and much more difficult to pinpoint. In a national primary that will be won a state by state basis; it's hard to see how a web ad will have any penetration to be effective.
