The recent Iowa poll puts Thompson in a precarious position. With first or second place now likely out of reach, Thompson needs a strong third place showing well ahead of Rudy Giuliani. He is likely to be aided in this endeavor when Mitt Romney goes negative against Giuliani.
Mike Huckabee also presents a problem. Thompson's strategy is based around the South, with a strong showing in South Carolina and then on Tsunami Tuesday (Feb. 5). If Huckabee is successful in knocking off Romney in Iowa, then he could have the media momentum going into South Carolina and could steal the favorite Southern son mantle from Thompson.
