
No candidate wants to be seen as going negative against their own party first, however against the other party, it's no holds barred. This is also an interesting ad by Romney because he's trying to position himself as the Republican nominee against Clinton. And it works because the average television viewer in a primary state has seen at least a dozen of his ads at this point, and has a familiarity with him they don't have with the other Republicans.
Interestingly as well, this ad actually helps Barack Obama and John Edwards because it's doing the dirty work for them. While it is still a soft negative, it does call into question Clinton's credentials.
