Three days. It only took 3 days for Mitt Romney to go negative since the first (and second) poll showed him trailing Mike Huckabee badly in Iowa.
The hit in the ad is two-fold. It subtly lowers Huckabee's stature by comparing him directly to Romney. At the same time, it takes a more direct shot at him on immigration.
It's a shot, however, that is slightly hyprocritical. The response from the Huckabee camp, per Jonathan Martin:
"We're disappointed that Governor Romney favors smearing his fellow Republicans as his primary campaign strategy. But the voters in Iowa are too savvy to fall for such desperate tactics. They have seen both Governor Huckabee's plan on immigration enforcement and border security and the less detailed approach put out by Governor Romney. As his ad notes, the choice does matter. We believe that on January 3rd Iowa voters will make the right choice."
Carter also sends along some research portraying Romney as less than enthusiastic about vetoing the bill that would have provided in-state tuition to illegal immigrants in Massachusetts.
"I hate the idea of in any way making it more difficult for kids, even those who are illegal aliens, to afford college in our state," Romney said in a June 2004 Boston Globe story.
And so Romney becomes the first one to violate Ronald Reagan's 11th Commandment.
