Joe Lieberman has endorsed his friend and Senate colleague John McCain for President. Lieberman, a long time Democrat, recently switched his affiliation to Independent-Democrat this Congress after the National Democrat establishment abandoned him last election cycle.
This is a curious endorsement; for everyone involved. While Lieberman does have his own national constituency as the only outspoken Jewish proponent of Israel in the U.S. Senate, the endorsement isn't likely to help McCain in the Republican primary. Republicans respect Lieberman tremendously, but unless they live in Connecticut they aren't likely to follow his lead.
For Lieberman, the endorsement of a Republican isn't likely to win him many Democratic friends. Although he says there are no hard feelings from 2006 when many of his colleagues endorsed the Democratic nominee and his opponent Ned Lamont, we wonder how long he will continue to caucus with the Democrats.
UPDATE: According to First Read, Lieberman endorsed his friend because McCain asked for his endorsement. None of the Democratic candidates did.
