Per Jonathan Martin, Fred Thompson is out with one of the most negative pieces of the Republican race attacking Mike Huckabee. It will hit Iowa mailboxes today.
It compares Huckabee, the newly crowned leader in Iowa, to Bill Clinton and attacks his record as governor:
Mike Huckabee raised taxes 21 times as Governor of Arkansas, costing tax payers $505 million. He raised taxes on nursing home beds, income, and gas. Mike Huckabee allowed the largest tax increase, in state history, to become law. Under Mike Huckabee, the average Arkansan's tax burden increased over 47& or $933 per person. He also increase state spending over 65%...more than three times the rate of inflation.
Mike Huckabee talks like a Republican but taxes like a Democrat.
It's an open secret that Huckabee's weak spot is taxes, but his outright support for the Fair Tax has, thus far, effectively neutralized the criticism. It's also surprising to see Thompson drop this mailer in Iowa when the latest poll shows him slipping in South Carolina to Huckabee, and Thompson's candidacy begins and ends in South Carolina.
