"Today I have withdrawn my candidacy for President of the United States," Thompson said. "I hope that my country and my party have benefited from our having made this effort. Jeri and I will always be grateful for the encouragement and friendship of so many wonderful people."
Thompson is widely expected to endorse his friend, John McCain.
And then there were five.
Thompson's withdrawl puts his home state back in play. Tennessee holds its primary on Feburary 5th, Tsunami Tuesday.
In Tennessee, every elected Republican from the Lt. Governor down to dogcatcher had endorsed Thompson for President. That list includes Reps. Marsha Blackburn and Jimmy Duncan, two Congressmen who had previously endorsed Mitt Romney for President. When Thompson entered the race, they both withdrew their support for Romney and endorsed Tennessee's native son. Do they go back to Romney? Blackburn represents a very socially conservative district that will probably vote for Mike Huckabee.
Thompson's exit also puts National Right to Life in a bind. NRL has once again backed a loser. Do they go with Huckabee who supports a Human Life Amendment and is the person most of their members will vote for; or do they remain neutral?
