Following on the heels of his fellow Floridian, Charlie Crist has endorsed John McCain for President:
The announcement broke into the national coverage which was primarily focused on the Democratic Primary in South Carolina. The timing of the endorsements could not have been better, and Crist and Martinez's endorsements are the big news of the weekend. It will continue to dominate coverage of the Florida race heading into the final leg of the campaign.
Crist makes one more member of the Florida establishment to join McCain's camp. Crist, who said he was prodded by Senator Mel Martinez is widely popular in the state having first been in elected in 2006. He previously served as Attorney General.
Talk of a Crist as a potential Vice President for McCain is warranted. The two previously campaigned together in Crist's first race for Governor in 2006 and a have long standing campaign relationship. During that campaign Crist also opted out of an appearance with President Bush.
On the other side of the Republican establishment, Jeb Bush, will likely stay out of the primary race. Bush, who has stronger cross party appeal than Crist, will likely save his fire for the general election and position himself for a Cabinet position.
