"In Greenville, they ask you where do you go to church? In Columbia, they ask you what do you do for a living? In Charleston, they ask you what'll you have to drink?"
Electoral Map's Primary Map of South Carolina tells the short story of how John McCain won; he carried the Columbia and Charleston areas.
The exit polls tell the long story:
-McCain beat Mike Huckabee 48%-23% in cities over 50,000; while they split the suburbs and rural areas.
-Huckabee dominted among self-identified 'very conservative' people who made up 34% of the elecrorate. But he split with McCain among 'conservatives' who made up 34% of the electorate. McCain trounced Huckabee among moderates and liberals that made up the rest of the electorate.
-Huckabee dominated among self-identified religious Protestants. But he lost to McCain and Fred Thompson among non-religious and Catholics.
-Huckabee beat McCain among people who make $30,000 or less a year, and lost in every other income category.
