Between the South Carolina debate where Thompson beat Huckabee and Thompson's bus tour; Thompson was making real gains in the state at the expense of Huckabee. After the poor debate performance, the response by the Huckabee camp was to play the Christian card.
It's not a big secret that many social conservatives are also Christians. When Huckabee got beat by Thompson in the debate, the response by the Huckabee camp was to directly court Christians; which also had the effect of undercutting Thompson's base.
It started this past Sunday following the debate when Huckabee gave a sermon at a church resurrecting his Southern Baptist preacher image. He explicitly kept church and politics seperate. But when Huckabee stepped out of the church and got on back on the stump, a little bit of that preacher came back out.
"I have opponents in this race who do not want to change the Constitution. But I believe it's a lot easier to change the Constitution than it would be to change the word of the living God; and that's what we need to do is to amend the Constitution so it's in God's standards rather than try to change God's standards."
Unfortunately, Huckabee may have played a primary card that could come back to haunt him in the general election should he make it there.
