McCain adviser Mark McKinnon revealed an interesting fact on Tucker today that gave an interesting inside look of the McCain campaign: no polling.
McKinnon said that they had not had an internal pollster since June when McCain's lagging campaign was forced to make cuts to save money. At that point McCain was the front runner. He looked and sounded like a President with a controlled message and polled language. He just didn't sound like John McCain.
Changing the message is exactly what McCain needed. He went back to the roots of his 2000 success. He returned to New Hampshire and started holding his patented town halls. The campaign opened access to the press and relied on more earned media. The Straight Talk Express made a triumphant return. Instead of tightly controlling the message, they let McCain be McCain. He just avoided the contentious topics.
Continous internal polling gets you Mitt Romney.
