"John McCain has firsthand knowledge of the evils of Communism. For decades, he's led the fight for human rights in Cuba and around the world. I have total confidence that John McCain will be Fidel Castro's worst nightmare," Martinez said in a statement.
This is a significant endorsement for a numbers of reasons.
Mel Martinez is part of the establishment. He served in President Bush's Cabinet and was briefly Chairman of the Republican National Committee. In Martinez's U.S. Senate primary in 2004, he had the support of the Florida and Washington establishments which helped him defeat his more conservative opponent Congressman Bill McCollum.
Martinez is also a Latino. He is a steward to his Hispanic constituents, and his endorsement is sure to help McCain among Hispanics in the southern part of the state.
