The most surprising thing this far into the campaign is the level of discourse. The Biz was sure that the campaign would be full blown negative by this point. Apparently, Mike Huckabee's decision to not run his negative ad against Mitt Romney closed the floodgates; at least temporarily.
Moving forward, it's hard to see how Fred Thompson remains a serious competitor for President. There were a lot of voters, social conservatives in particular, sitting in the Tsunami Tuesday states who were watching the results last night to see how Thompson did. Today, they are putting Huckabee signs in their yard.
But Thompson does not necessarily need to drop out. A brokered convention looms on the horizon. If Thompson stays in the race and continues to win delegates; he could eventually trade his delegates for an Attorney General or Supreme Court appointment.
