Jonathan Martin is reporting that Mike Huckabee looks like he will be moving past the Sunshine State and on to February 5th:
Huckabee, too, is getting cold feet about both the cost and challenge of Florida. He made plain to the AP last night that he may pull back from the Sunshine State, and campaign manager Chip Saltsman confirms to me that they have not yet purchased any TV time there. "We're still looking at it," Saltsman wrote in an email, "might be for [the] last weekend." Huckabee was in Georgia -- a Feb. 5th state -- for part of the day yesterday and is back there again today.
For the Huckabee camp, this is all part of the lowering expectations game.
Huckabee is going to win Evangelicals in Florida regardless of whether he contests the state. By not actively campaigning there, a third place finish would look impressive. Even a fourth place finish, if it is within striking distance of third, would be impressive. And besides, everyone else has taken a pass, why can't Huckabee?
It also seems like the right move for Huckabee. McCain, Giuliani, and Romney are all blanketting the air waves in Florida. Getting involved in that ad war could result in bankruptcy for the Huckabee camp and leave them without television or ads heading into February 5th.
