
A new post-Iowa, pre-New Hampshire poll from Michigan has Mike Huckabee leading Mitt Romney:
Huckabee 23%
Romney 22%
McCain 18%
Giuliani 8%
Thompson 4%
Paul 3%
Expect the results from last night to influence the next poll.
Michigan is relevant because Romney made it relevant.
A heavily unionized and Democratic state, it is not friendly territory to Republicans. Additionally, it is not one of the traditional Triumvirate states that have historically determined the nominee. The national media would have been content to just let it pass.
But then Romney announced his campaign from there and indicated he would commit resources there. Afterall, it's his home state. And then the Michigan legislature moved the primary date up. Romney made his case that it was relevant again, and the national media bought it.
At the time, this was good news for the Romney campaign. They were expecting it to be an easy win and momentum builder coming off wins in Iowa and New Hampshire. But then reality caught up. Now Romney finds himself fighting for his political life in a state that he grew up in and his father once governed.
