There were two winners last night to emerge on the Republican side, John McCain and Mike Huckabee.
Mike Huckabee exceeded expectations once again carrying almost all of the states in the South. Looking ahead, Huckabee will continue stumping across the United States. Texas and Ohio, the two largest remaining states, both hold their primaries on March 4. Huckabee's populist message will appeal in Ohio while his Southern charm and religiosity will appeal in Texas.
John McCain is now way ahead in the delegate count, and at this point appears to be the presumptive nominee. He will continue stumping across the United States as well, and look for his message to begin to take more of a general election turn. He and Huckabee will likely spend many a day together on the campaign trail leading up to, and past, the convention.
Romney has to face some tough decisions this morning. Now that it appears unlikely that he will be the eventual Republican nominee; he must now decide how much more of his personal fortune it is worth to continue his campaign. He barely cracked 50% in Massachusetts, a state he once governed, and he only won five more delegates than McCain.
