The Rev. Jeremiah Wright thrust himself into the center of the news cycle today appearing before the National Press Club kicking off a symposium on the "African American" religious experience. He provided the press with some memorable clips, and some quotes that seemingly undermine Obama's image of being above politics:
Wright undermines Obama's candidacy because every time he appears on television it reminds people of his outrageous comments and that the Obama family sat in the pews of his church for 20 years listening to this garbage:“We both know that if Sen. Obama did not say what he said, he would never get elected,” Wright said. “Politicians say what they say and do what they do based on electability, based on sound bites, based on polls."
Instead of directly responding to whether his controversial remarks have hurt Obama’s candidacy, Wright instead said criticisms of him are, “not an attack on Jeremiah Wright; it is an attack on the black church.” He added, “It has nothing to do with Sen. Obama; it is an attack on the black church launched by people who know nothing about the African-American religious tradition.”
